BASIC SAFETY RULES
1. KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.
This means the firearm’s muzzle must always point down range when in use. NO
EXCEPTIONS. The firearm is in use from the moment it is touched to when it is returned to storage and your hands leave the firearm. Rifles and shotguns (long guns) are stored in the racks behind the shooting benches. All firearms must have their muzzles pointing straight up when moving from the racks to the firing line or from bench to bench. Handguns may be left on the bench tops with their muzzles pointed down range if their actions are open and they are unloaded. All firearms must be treated as if they are always loaded. Only cased or holstered firearms may be carried so the muzzles are pointed anywhere but down range or straight up while on the SVRC Range.
2. KEEP FIREARMS UNLOADED AND ACTIONS OPEN UNTIL READY TO FIRE.
The only firearms that may be loaded on the SVRC Range are those in shooter’s hands at the firing line and holstered handguns.
You are responsible to check all of your firearms to ensure that they are unloaded every time you touch them. You must make this check even if you just witnessed a trusted person perform the check on the same firearm. Special events may require a “Cold Range”. A cold range means that no person may carry a loaded firearm. On a cold range, only the contestants at the firing line are allowed to load his or her firearm.
3. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO FIRE.
You may not touch the trigger until the muzzle is aimed down range. This rule is necessary to help prevent accidental discharges. Dry fire is not allowed unless the firearm is aimed down range. NO EXCEPTIONS.
4. KEEP YOURSELF AWARE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND.
It is your responsibility to shoot so that each bullet (or ball, pellet, or other projectile) will stop in a safe area. You must constantly look beyond your immediate target to make sure no person or animal or unsafe situation is near your bullet’s path. You may not aim or fire in any direction that may allow the bullet to leave the strict confines of the SVRC Range.
5. KEEP EVERYONE SAFE WITH MANDATORY EYE AND EAR PROTECTION.
Everyone on the range must wear eye and ear protection whenever anyone is firing. This includes all spectators.
NO EXCEPTIONS.
PISTOL RANGE (Auxiliary Range) RULES
- Pistols and rim-fire rifles only.
- In order to minimize the possibility of a ricochet leaving the range, all bullets must land in the wooden impact area.
- Soft targets only. No steel. No cans. No bowling pins.
- Target stands must be wood. No steel.
- Targets in the 0 to 25-yard area must not exceed 54 inches in height and must be so placed that bullets will strike the wooden impact area.
- Targets placed at 26 to 50 yards must be of the proper height to assure that bullets will strike the wooden impact area at 50 yards.
- Do not shoot the cedar bales. Do not shoot the hill to the right. Do not shoot above the 50-yd wooden impact area.
- If there are other shooters sharing this range, please stay in your lane.

RANGE COMMANDS
CEASE FIRE
Upon hearing this command, immediately stop shooting and unload your firearm completely. Rifles and shotguns must be unloaded, then racked with the actions open or placed in their carrying case. Handguns must be unloaded, then placed in their cases. The warning buzzer and flashing red lights must be turned on and the flagging must be raised across the firing line to remind all shooters that the range is in a
CEASEFIRE... The person calling the CEASEFIRE is the acting range master during the cease-fire. The acting range master is responsible for the safe observance and loud announcement of the range commands until he or she gives the commence firing command.
CEASE-FIRE ON THE RIFLE RANGE EXTENDS TO THE PISTOL RANGE.
RANGE IS SAFE
NO ONE HANDLES ANY FIREARM FOR ANY REASON. This command is given when the acting range master has assured himself or herself that all firearms have been made safe and properly stored. Shooters may then go down range to change targets. No firearms are handled until everyone is back behind the firing line and the command COMMENCE FIRING is given. NO EXCEPTIONS.
READY ON THE RIGHT? READY ON THE LEFT? READY ON THE FIRING LINE.
You must say, “NO”, if you are not ready. The acting range master will assume that you are ready if you remain silent. Immediately put on eye and ear protection at this command. The acting range master will carefully scan the range again to ensure that the range is safe for firing.
COMMENCE FIRING
At this command you may load and fire.

- If they do not have a badge, ask to see their membership card (Only members know that the SVRC badge is their membership card.)
- Non-members are often responsible for damage to the range.
- If you see someone acting in an unsafe manner, politely tell him or her. If you have to repeatedly speak to someone, report their name and auto license number to the SVRC Secretary at 222-SVRC (222-7872).
- Each member and their guests may use only one (1) table when the range is busy.
- Use the target stands and cardboard to mount your targets.
- Pull your targets off and clean up when you are done.
- Replace the caps on the target standpipes when you are finished.

REPORT UNAUTHORIZED SHOOTERS. Take their vehicle license number and report it to the SVRC telephone number, (206) 222-SVRC (7872). Include a complete description of their vehicle, the shooters and their actions. Unauthorized shooters are trespassers.
-
DEMAND GOOD SHOOTING HABITS FROM EVERY SHOOTER AND GUEST. You must obey all SVRC safety rules. All other shooters must obey all SVRC safety rules. Violation of the basic rules of safety may result in injuries. Injuries will result in higher insurance costs and more safety regulations. Remember: when you have a firearm in your hand, you are the responsible party. Your actions will determine your future as well as that of the Snoqualmie Valley Rifle Club.
